Cock O’ the Wyre trophy result 2018

On a thoroughly miserably cold, wet and windless day three brave Laser sailors and a lone Topper battled it out for the Cock O’ the Wyre’s iconic trophy. Despite the weather, all three races proved to be competitive and very close with the final winner not being decided until the very last race.

Simon Yeomans took the first race with Martin Landon in second place , closely followed by Craig Chadderton. Mattthew Chaderton on his Topper did his best to keep up with the Lasers but the lack of a consistent breeze meant that he fell behind but made a valiant effort to complete the course.

In the second race Craig turned the table on Simon to win by about 40 seconds with Martin finishing third. Matthew decided to forego the pleasure of getting colder and wetter by not doing the race.

This led to a very delicate third race in which any one of the three Lasers could have won the trophy on countback. As with the other races the result was decided on the last leg.  Simon went into a clear lead at the final mark but with a very fickle wind both Craig and Martin had their chance to catch him. A final lift took Simon over the line as Craig had problems with his mainsheet. Martin took second place with Craig in third position.

Despite some gruesome weather we all “enjoyed” some excellent tactical racing ( especially if you were in the race hut with the heating on full. ) Well done all !
