Olympic Regatta Tickets

If you have already tried to obtain tickets for the Olympics you will know how difficult they are to get hold of. The club has been given the fantastic opportunity to purchase 3 pairs of tickets courtesy of Ali Young and the RYA as a result of Ali’s selection to compete in the Laser Radial. Ali has nominated TSC to have the right to purchase the tickets as Trimpley is “where it started”!

At this stage we do not know which dates we will obtain tickets for (they could be for any day 29th July – 8th August) however the club has requested the following as our preferred choices:
1. 6th August (Laser Radial Medal Race, Laser Medal Race, 49er, 470)
2. 4th August (Laser Radial, 470,RSX & Elliot 6m)
3. 3rd August (Laser Radial, Laser, Finn, Star, 470 & 49er)
As previously stated we could receive tickets for any day of the regatta.

The tickets will be issued in pairs and will entitle entrance for 2 people for one day of spectating.

The price of tickets 29th July – 4th August inclusive are £35 each (£70 for the pair) with tickets for 5th August – 8th August inclusive £55 each (£110 for the pair) because of the demand for medal races.

Due to the expected high demand for these tickets, the committee has decided the fairest way to decide who should be able to purchase the pairs of tickets is to enter the names of individuals wishing to buy into a draw.

We will let you have specific details of how to enter the draw and the dates we have been allocated as soon as we are able – watch this space!

We send our thanks to Ali for this great opportunity to experience the Olympic Regatta and hopefully cheer her on to a win!

As most of you are aware we have a number of club boats (Toppers / Bugs / Lasers and GP14′s) which are all available for members to use if they have no boat of their own or wish to try out a different class to one they own.

Following this month’s Taste of Sailing hopefully we can expect to see some new members taking to the water, being the friendly club that we are it is always good to see the help and advice offered by experienced sailors to those looking a bit unsure of themselves when released from the care of their mentors..!

The successful use and availability of the clubs boats relies on them being in a good and sailable condition so can we ask if any one finds any damage / missing parts or any other issues with the boats that they please report them as soon as possible to either the Flag Officer on the day or a committee member so the problem can be sorted asap.
It goes without saying that the boats need to be put back as they are found and if any parts are taken to be used on other boats they are returned after use.
And finally, we do ask a small fee which goes towards the upkeep and maintenance of the club fleet so please don’t forget to put your name down and put your money in the box!!

Thanks,

Trimpley Sailing Club – Bala Cruising Weekend 22th/23th/24th June 2012 at Glanllyn Camp Site

This Trip is not just for the sailors amongst us there are other activities available, also if you feel you wish to use the Bed and Breakfast facilities in the town that is fine!

You will still be able to launch your boat and BBQ with us if you want to!

(if you are booking BB please copy me in so I know you’re coming…)

Itinerary…

(some peeps are going Thursday night)

Friday turn up early and ‘grab’ a nice pitch J …then chill with a cool beer

Maybe bring a cooked chilli or something to warm up (or get fish and chips as you drive through Bala town)

Saturday:

There will be various activities during the day:

Sailing :

Free sailing on the lake – we usually take a picnic sail round stop off at the Catamaran club at Langower, have go with the spinnaker,
practice those gybes, tour the entire lake (down to the bottom for tea and cake at the café or the sailing clubhouse) or just whizz around, you need to be aware that there is no rescue facility on the lake so think about sailing with at least one other boat and remember the weather can change so take an extra fleece and spray top or suit .

Just like cruising at Trimpley, it would be safer to sail in groups of two or three, as sailing buddies so if you decide to sail off to the
end of the lake, another boat will be near at hand if anyone needs assistance. You don’t need to sail in close formation but be
reasonably close so you can be the first or one of the first boats on hand if need be.

I suggest we meet on Saturday at the beach at 10.30 am for a briefing. At that time we can decide on the conditions and who wants to do what. It might be a dead calm at 11.00, be blowing a force 3 by noon and a force 6 or more later in the afternoon! So check the forecast and
keep a weather eye open. It might be a long beat back up the lake to the campsite!

You will need to pay a launching fee and the Bala Lake Warden arrives on site at the beach at 11.am to issue permits. We normally ‘negotiate’ a favourable ‘weekend rate’.

The beaches around the lake tend to be pebbly You may want to take a small anchor or some cushion pads to beach the boat without a launching trolley but there are usually strong hands around to lift the boat out and into the water if you decide to stop off anywhere.

Walking

There are some beautiful walks in the vicinity of Bala Lake so if sailing is not your bag I am sure there will be enough people to get a ramble going …it’s not just the sailing we are going for…

One of the walks is about 4 miles and climbs up onto the hills (wear suitable footwear) for some splendid views over the lake, and finishes at Bala Lake Railway station. Take a packed lunch and a drink for a picnic on the way and at a leisurely pace you could expect to be at Bala Station at 3.30. Bala town is a further 1/2 mile. The last train back to Llangower or Llanuwchllyn departs Bala at 4.35pm.

Llangower Station is on the far side of the lake from the Camp site and you can get there by car.

Narrow gauge steam train departs 11.15. from Llanuwchllyn Station. It is about 21/2 miles from the campsite.

Other Activities

You are welcome to do anything you like. Sailing and walking is not compulsory. There are information sheets in
the camp office and a big tourist information centre on the lakeside at Bala Town.

There is cycle hire on the campsite or in Bala town.

If you fancy white water rafting, you will need to book. Tel 01678 521083 for info and bookings.

Saturday Evening
Entertainment

BBQ

On the Saturday evening, after everyone has finished their full day of activities, whether that is sailing, hiking or sightseeing from a railway
carriage, We feel it would be great if we could all have a bit of a get together to share our day’s experiences.
All those families who are interested in taking part will need to bring a small BBQ and some meat or fish to cook on it. Sadly, the club BBQ will not be present at this event as it would be just a little on the large side to transport to Bala, We can then have a communal “cook up” – (please note
that the Campsite rules state that all BBQ’s must be off the ground). To make life easier could all family units
provide 1 or 2 “side order” dishes for a group buffet table – this could be coleslaw, potato salad, rice, breads or nacho chips and dips – I will leave you to decide. We can then all “dig in” and share together. We will co-ordinate this nearer the time otherwise we end up with 2 tonnes of coleslaw…

Entertainment

We usually dream up various things to do, maybe a quiz, a tug-of-war or some crazy games. If you have an entertainment talent, this is the time to take the stage” – Juggling, Fire-eating, Plate spinning – this is your opportunity. We will take one of the huge TSC club gazebos as a focal point and cover (if needed).

Then we get a fire going and entertain ourselves (quietly please J)

Fireside tales of ‘5 mile spinnaker legs’ and ‘6ft octopus wrestling’ etc..

Sunday

Another ‘blast round the bay’ or another walk starting at 11.30 from the campsite,

Booking in:

We have booked in 20 pitches Friday and Saturday night. PLEASE LET ME KNOW THAT YOU ARE GOING TO COME
ALONG AND FOR WHICH NIGHTS YOU WILL WANT A PITCH – so that we can ensure that
we booked roughly the right number of pitches. I have gone for open ground ‘pitches’ without any electricity hook up.

NO deposit is required. Pay upon arrival For prices please follow link http://www.glanllyn.com/Glanllyn%20pitch%20fees.pdf

I intend to re- confirm our booking again the week before we go

Shout if you want more info….

Alison Young, who started her sailing career here at Trimpley Sailing Club, has been selected to represent the nation sailing in the Laser Radial class at Weymouth in the forthcoming 2012 Olympic Games.

Alison started sailing aged 8 with her dad, Keith, in a GP14 at Trimpley by attending one of our learn to sail courses. She quickly took to the sport sailing an Optimist dinghy, followed by a stint in the Topper class before moving into the Laser Radial. She started competing at youth events locally and nationally, and later internationally, culminating in a Bronze medal at the ISAF Youth World Championships in 2005. In recent years she has been training hard with Skandia TeamGBR in the development squad, and since 2010, the performance squad.

Alison was called up to the Olympic team after a series of consistent performances in the sailing world cup, which sees her ranked 4th internationally. Her inclusion means she will be in the same team as sailing greats Ben Ainslie, Paul Goodison, Bryony Shaw, Andrew Simpson and Iain Percy.

Alison gets to grips with the Laser Radial at Trimpley back in 2002

Speaking after the selection, Alison said: “I was stunned when I found out, but it’s pretty cool to be selected for an Olympic Games, and for a home Games it’s even more exciting. There’s a lot of experience in the team, and a lot of knowledge so hopefully I’ll be able to tap into some of that experience to help me at my first Games.”

“There’s a lot of work to do now that I’ve been selected to push to get into the medals, and that’s what I’m aiming to do, so that I can put in the best result I can. My strengths have always been in the breeze, mostly down to my fitness and now technique as well. But my light wind game and my decision-making are developing as well, so I’ll keep pushing those forward and hopefully the hard work in those areas will keep moving ready for the summer.”

Alison returns to Trimpley for the clubs Laser open meeting in 2006

Everyone at Trimpley is so excited to have a homegrown sailor competing at the Olympics and we all wish her the best of luck for the Games. For a tiny lake in the middle of the country, with only light, fluky winds more often than not, the club has a remarkable history of producing top notch sailors. Of course, Alison’s achievement is the best to date and we hope she can go on to win Olympic Gold. For anyone inspired by Alison’s story, and who wants to get into sailing should get in contact with us. We regularly run learn to sail courses and there are lots of options to cater for all ages. Hopefully we can start building the next generation of Olympic sailors!

Commodore Andy Allan sent Alison an SMS congratulating her from everyone at Trimpley; her reply: “Thanks, lot of work to do to get a medal-bring it on!”
